Nursing scholarships are available to those looking to attend nursing school, but there are often several gates you have to cross in order to be considered for one. Typically, the student applying for a nursing scholarship has already completed the prerequisite courses required and has an above standard grade point average (3.0 is considered average). To be accepted into nursing school is an honor, because competition is fierce and surviving nursing school takes the best of the best. According to many statistics, almost 50% of those admitted fail out of nursing school within the first year. Just ask Briana Oster, Fund for Thought's most recent recipient of the $2,000 nursing scholarship. Briana says, “motivation alone may not get your through”. You have to have “passion and work ethic” re-emphasizes Oster, “to accomplish your dreams”.
If you've made it into nursing school, what scholarships are available for you? Fund for Thought offers a $2,000 nursing scholarship, and the deadline is November 30, 2016. It is a 500-750 word essay describing your passion and goals, and only 250 applicants are allowed to apply at a time. Another resource, would be the nursing school that you will be attending. Often times there are several small scholarships up for grabs, and there may be available scholarships that pay for everything as well. Check on your school's website or with the financial aid office for more details. A third option we would like to mention is nursejournal.org. They have a listing of over 70+ grants and scholarships that you can apply for--just make sure you read the qualifications for each one carefully first. Finally, forevernursing.org has separate listings for both undergraduate and graduate nursing scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $7,500. Again, read the fine print to make sure you have a chance at qualifying before you spend your time putting in an application.
